BEFORE YOU BUY A
WHIPPET....HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES - PLEASE READ!
1. Whippets in the newspaper
or on Craig's list, etc. is a bad sign. Reputable Whippet breeders take reservations long before
their litter is born and do not have to advertise. Also note that just because
they have a pretty web site, it does not make them reputable. It is also a
bad sign if a breeder offers multiple breeds for sale. This is a red flag
that they are a commercial breeder or puppy mill.
2. Make sure the breeder is
an AWC (American Whippet Club member) This can easily be confirmed and make sure
you do so to see if their record is good. If they are not a member, find
out why? Get references (names and contact info for people having gotten a dog
from them) and call or email them to see what they say about their dealings with
this breeder.
3. You MUST do a personal
visit to the see the Whippet breeder
and check out the environment. Resist buying from anyone that has a bad
situation just to "save" the puppy or adult. That is how they
make money. A dirty environment produces a dirty puppy. Parents with shy
or weird temperaments produce the same. Be careful! Any breeder that
refuses to let you see where the puppies are raised and offers to
"deliver" the puppy has something to hide. See both of the parents if
possible.
4. Get on waiting lists of
reputable Whippet breeders that are planning litters, leave a deposit and keep in touch.
Make sure you get a full health guarantee and contract to cover unforeseen
circumstances should your dog or puppy
not work out. We always give new homes a two week trial period just
in case.
5. Parents of Whippet litters should have the appropriate
certifications and health screenings done. This means eyes CERF certified
and hearts checked. Don't take their word for it, ask to see copies of the
certificates. Some Whippet breeders are also doing BAER testing for hearing disorders.
6. Research. Get a
copy of the pedigree and ask some AWC breeders their opinions about health or
temperament problems that they may be aware of. Even if you are only
looking for a companion or pet Whippet, it is a good sign to see that the
parents and pedigree have champion titles. This proves that they are of
recognized quality and worthy of being bred.
7. Take your time.
Have the Whippet puppy or
adult evaluated by other reputable breeders before you make a final decision.
Whippets live a long time. You deserve a healthy, well bred and well socialized
Whippet that will enhance your life.
